From Chengdu to Global Markets: A Hydrogen Mobility Company Scaling Up
At China West Connector, we continuously meet companies that represent the next wave of technological development emerging from Western China. Last Saturday, March 7, 2026, in Chengdu, we had the opportunity to meet the team from Sichuan Qinglv Hydrogen Energy Development Co., Ltd., a company working in the field of hydrogen mobility.
Much of the global conversation around clean mobility today focuses on battery electric vehicles. Yet hydrogen technologies are also advancing in parallel, particularly in mobility segments where fast refueling and long operational cycles are important.
What makes Qinglv interesting is that their work is already moving beyond the experimental stage. The company has deployed hydrogen-powered two-wheelers in several Chinese cities. One of the earliest deployments took place in Chengdu, where hydrogen bikes were introduced in shared mobility operations. These vehicles use compact fuel-cell systems combined with solid-state hydrogen storage cylinders. Instead of waiting for batteries to recharge, the hydrogen cylinders can be replaced quickly, allowing the vehicles to return to service almost immediately.
Beyond the vehicles themselves, the company is developing a broader ecosystem around hydrogen applications. This includes modular hydrogen power packs, customized fuel-cell systems, and small-scale hydrogen energy solutions that can be applied in different mobility and energy scenarios.
After several successful deployments and growing operational data, the company is now preparing for its Series B financing round, aiming to scale production capacity and accelerate commercialization.
At the same time, Qinglv has started exploring international markets. Early expansion initiatives are being considered in Pakistan and Australia, each with different business models adapted to local market conditions.
For China West Connector, meetings like this highlight how regional innovation ecosystems in China — including Chengdu and the broader Sichuan region — continue to produce companies working on practical solutions in areas such as hydrogen energy, advanced manufacturing, and next-generation mobility.
As the global energy transition evolves, it will be interesting to see how companies like Qinglv expand from domestic deployments to international markets.
