China’s Record-Breaking 26 MW Offshore Wind Turbine: A New Era in Renewable Energy

Dongfang Electric Corp has taken a monumental step in the wind energy industry with the launch of its 26-megawatt offshore wind turbine in Fuqing, Fujian Province. This groundbreaking turbine, the largest in the world, was developed entirely with Chinese intellectual property and marks a significant leap in offshore wind technology, reinforcing China’s position as a global leader in renewable energy.

Equipped with state-of-the-art components, including advanced generators, blades, bearings, and electronic control systems, this turbine is designed to capture higher wind speeds and withstand extreme conditions, such as typhoons. Standing at 185 meters with the world’s longest rotor diameter, the turbine produces an astounding 100 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually—enough to power 55,000 households. This achievement is expected to save over 30,000 metric tons of coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 80,000 tons each year, boosting China’s green energy transition.

Experts emphasize the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of larger turbines, which lower electricity production costs and advance offshore wind power into deeper sea regions. As a result, China is becoming a dominant force in the global offshore wind power market, traditionally led by European manufacturers.

As China rapidly scales up its wind and solar energy capacities, the country continues to accelerate its clean energy transition. In just the first eight months of 2024, China saw a 48.8% year-on-year growth in solar power capacity, now totaling approximately 750 million kilowatts. At the same time, wind power capacity reached 470 million kilowatts, growing 19.9%.

This new 26 MW turbine underscores China’s innovative strides in renewable energy technology, paving the way for future breakthroughs in sustainable development. Local governments and enterprises are encouraged to seize opportunities in wind and solar power, reinforcing China’s commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.
